Mike Young Wofford Terriers Corner Pin Series

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Ron Hunter Georgia State Zone Offense by Wes Kosel

Here are two zone plays from Georgia State head coach Ron Hunter from Georgia State’s win over Baylor in the NCAA Tournament. Hunter is in his 4th season at Georgia State and 21st year as a head coach. Before taking over at Georgia State in 2011, Hunter was the head coach at IUPUI for 17 years. Hunter coached IUPUI through the transition from NAIA to Division 1. While there, Hunter compiled a 274-219 record. At Georgia State, he has now won 2 straight Sun Belt Conference regular season championships. In the round of 64 game against Baylor, the Panthers kept chipping away against Scott Drew’s zone. The Panthers shot only 31.3% from 3-point range, but hit the most important shot of the game when R.J. Hunter, Ron’s son, hit the game winner. At that point in the game, R.J. was only 1 of 6 from deep, but still had the confidence to take the last shot. Here is a look at a couple of ways that Georgia State attacked the zone.

Ron Hunter Georgia State Zone Offense – Zone Horns
1 dribbles off of a double ball-screen from 5 and 4 at the top of the key. As 1 clears the screen, 5 dives down to the block and 4 pops out to the perimeter. 1 passes to 4 who passes to 3 cutting from the corner inside to the lane and back out to the wing. Once 3 has the ball, 5 screens for 2 in the lane. 3 looks to pass to 2 in the corner for a shot or to 4 diving down the lane line.

Ron Hunter Georgia State Zone Offense – Zone Overload
1 passes to 2 away from the overload. 5 flashes to the elbow and 3 cuts to the ball-side block. 2 then reverses the ball to 1 who passes to 3 in the corner. 4 screens for 5 at the elbow. 3 looks to shoot in the corner or pass to 5 cutting to the basket.
