I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Rick Pitino Louisville Cardinals Set Play by Wes Kosel

Attached is an Rick Pitino Louisville Cardinals Set Play against man-to-man defense from Coach Rick Pitino. Pitino, 2 time NCAA Champion (1996, 2013), has won over 300 games at Louisville and over 650 games in his career. Pitino has won 30+ games in the past 3 seasons, including the 35-5 record during the 2012-2013 NCAA Championship season. Before coaching at Louisville, Pitino served as the head coach at Kentucky, Providence and Boston University. He also spent part of a season as interim head coach of Hawaii, and spent time in the NBA as an assistant and head coach. Pitino does a great job of utilizing plays with multiple scoring options which helps his players play with patience and confidence.

Rick Pitino Louisville Cardinals Set Play: Lob to Stagger Ball-Screen

The play starts with 4 trailing the play, 2 and 3 on the wings, and 5 at the free-throw line in the high post. 1 passes to 4 then cuts off of a back-screen from 5. 4 dribbles toward the wing and gives the ball to 3 on a dribble hand-off. 3 first looks to make a lob pass to 1 for lay-up if he is open on the back-cut. If 1 isn’t open, he steps out to the corner to clear the lane. 3 dribbles across the floor while 2 cuts the opposite way off of 5 and 4. 3 passes to 2 then cuts off of 4 to the basket. 2 first looks for 3 on the cut, and if 3 isn’t open 2 dribbles off of a staggered ball-screen from 4 and 5. 4 rolls to the basket and 1 steps up to the wing then slides to the corner as 2 approaches with the dribble. 2 looks for 4 in the post or to 1 in the corner for a shot. If neither is open, 5 sets a down screen for 3 who pops up for a shot.
