I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. Ric Wesley Grand Valley State Lakers Early Offense by Wes Kosel

Attached are four early offense options from Grand Valley State University head coach Ric Wesley. Grand Valley State is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and is an NCAA Division II school. Wesley is entering his 11th season as the head coach of the GVSU Lakers. In ten years, he has put together a 224-77 record. He has yet to have a losing season at GVSU, and was awarded the GLIAC Coach of the Year award in 2008 after leading his team to a 36-1 record and a trip to the NCAA Division II Elite 8. Before taking over for the Lakers, Wesley served as an assistant at Southwest Missouri State under Barry Hinson, at Lamar University under Grey Giovanine, and at Iowa State under Johnny Orr. He got his coaching start at Central Michigan as a student assistant coach.

1 passes to 4 who passes to 3. 2 cuts off of a screen from 5 and posts up at the ball-side low post. If 2 isn’t open, 4 screens for 1. 3 passes to 1. Once 1 has the ball, 2 cuts off of a staggered screen in the lane from 5 and 4.

1 dribbles towards 2 and gives him the ball on a dribble hand-off. 4 screens away for 3 who gets the ball off of a pass from 2. Once 3 has the ball, 4 and 5 set a staggered baseline screen for 1.

1 passes to 4 who passes to 3. 5 follows the ball block to block. 4 sets a ball-screen for 3. 3 drives to the middle as 2 sets a flare screen for 1 and 5 sets a back-screen for 4.

1 passes to 4 who passes to 3. 5 follows the ball and 2 moves to the short corner. Once 3 has the ball, 4 and 1 set a staggered screen for 2 who cuts up for a shot.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
