Read and React Offense Quick Hitters by Hugo Boisvert

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Read and React Offense Quick Hitters by Hugo Boisvert

Coach Rick Torbett created the Read and React offense over 10 years ago. His will to make five players react and move as one unit drove him to put together a series of layers for the R&R. The result is a remarkably fluid offense within which both the players and the coach can be creative. Coach Torbett’s undisputable knowledge and understanding of the game allowed him to put together a positionless style of Basketball with endless scoring opportunities. I believe that the R&R is the number one offense out there in terms of player development and I also believe it can be used at all levels.

One of the problems some coaches seem to have with this offense is their inability to control which player takes the shot or has the ball in his/her hands. I believe there are ways, within the layers of the offense, to do just that. It is possible to start the offense with a quick hitting action if you feel that you’re team should exploit a mismatch or if you just want to force your opponent to defend a specific action.

What I attempted to do here is combine different layers of the offense to create actions that are hard to defend. With these quick hitters, you can put your players in a position where they are most effective while staying within the concepts of the R&R. I would love to have your feedback on these plays!

Read and React Offense Quick Hitters: 1-4 high into single double:

First option is a backdoor cut from the 2 man on the dribble at. Once the ball is on the wing, 4 will set a ball screen for the point guard and then pop out. As this action occurs, 5 will look to pin x3 on the weakside. 1 will look to find 3 on the flair screen and basket cut. After his pin, 5 will ball screen 3 on the wing and roll into a pin down. Set will end with 1 in a single double situation (5 screening on one side, 2 and 4 on the other).

Read and React Offense Quick Hitters: D.A.R.P.:
Coach Torbett calls this action a D.A.R.P. (Dribble away return pass). As 2 is filling the top spot, 5 will look to pin his defender and 1 will look for either 2 or 5 on a slip to the basket. If 1 decides to skip the ball to 2, 5 should still dive hard to the rim for a quick score or deep post position.

Read and React Offense Quick Hitters: Power dribble + pin into ball screen:
Set begins with 1 to 4 pass and a basket cut. 1 will then fill the strong side corner. 4 power dribbles towards 2 and rolls hard to the rim. As this action occurs, 5 will look to pin x3. If 2 doesn’t have a scoring opportunity after the power dribble, he/she will bounce off and trigger the ball screen by 5. Circle movement occurs on the perimeter. Here I chose to space 4 to the corner (assuming he/she is a threat from the outside), but you could also lift 4 to the high post or simply space him/her to the short corner.
