Randy Rahe Weber State Wildcats 1-4 High Offense by Wes Kosel
Here are two 1-4 high set plays from Weber State head coach Randy Rahe. Rahe is entering his 9th season as the head coach at Weber State. During his first eight years, he won 169 games, never had a losing season, and has won Big Sky Coach of the Year 3 times (2007, 2009, & 2010). He has finished in the top 3 in the Big Sky all 8 years, including four 1st place finishes. Before taking over as the head coach for the Wildcats, Rahe was an assistant at several programs including Utah, Utah State, Colorado State, Denver, Colorado, and Colorado College. He graduate from Buena Vista University in Iowa and played both basketball and baseball while in college. He started his coaching career at the high school level before jumping into the college game in 1988.

The play starts with 1 dribbling to the right and 2 moving down to the block to screen for 3 running across the baseline. 5 moves down to the opposite block, and cuts off of a cross screen from 2 once 3 has the ball in the corner. If 5 isn’t open, he turns around to set a re-cross screen for 2. 3 dribbles up the wing and looks to pass to 2 for a shot.

2 and 3 run across the floor rubbing off of 5 and 4 at the elbows. 1 passes to 3 on the right wing then makes a shallow cut to the corner. 4 screens across for 5 then rolls to the basket. 3 looks to pass to 5 who looks hi/lo to 4. If the hi/lo isn’t there, 5 swings the ball to 2 who looks for a shot or for the pass inside to 4. 5 and 3 set a backside staggered screen for 1 who cuts up for a shot.
Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
