I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Utah Jazz Quin Snyder has his team at 15-18 right now, but they have been battling injuries and having to deal with the loss of Gordon Hayward. They are figuring out how to deal with the loss of their NBA All-Star and the rise of Donovan Mitchell.

Utah Jazz Coach Quin Snyder has a slew of young guns that are coming into their own, a bunch of vets, and a superstar rookie in the making in Donovan Mitchell with rim protector Rudy Gobert.

Quin Snyder has rehabbed his coaching career through time in the NBDL (Now NBA G-League) and Euroleague. The Utah Jazz coach hasn’t followed the same path as most NBA coaches to the top. He had success followed by hard times, and then a remarkable surge to the NBA.

Coach Snyder was a rising college assistant coach in the early 2000’s serving with Coach K at Duke. He took the Missouri job to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances including an Elite Eight in his first four years of being their coach. His name was included in coaching circles as being a successor to Mike Krzyzewski.

Missouri was charged with multiple NCAA violations, and he was out the door. Snyder got a job with the D-League Austin Toros, followed by a stint as an assistant coach with Ettore Messina of the CSKA Moscow, Philadelphia 76’ers, and the Atlanta Hawks.

Quin Snyder has increased the Utah Jazz win total each year from 38 to 40 to 51. We will see what they do this year without Gordon Hayward. His most significant lesson that he learned from Coach Mike Krzyzewski was to have vigorous communication even when it seems that you don’t have to have it. Do it in a way that is sincere and very effective.

Most NBA coaches think that his teams execute very well, have great spacing, and want to play together.

Donovan Mitchell is going to be a unique NBA Player.

Mitchell was a late lottery pick by an NBA playoff team picked at Number 13 on the assumption that the pro game might suit him better than the college game did. Mitchell has already shaken off the pecking order to be a starter and Utah’s leading scorer.

Mitchell is going to be a force for Quin Snyder. His drives to the basket are among Utah’s best options. He causes lanes to open up and force rotations that leave the members of the Utah Jazz with open looks. Utah doesn’t have a lot of shooters to exploit that method, but they will after this year.

Donovan Mitchell leads 2017 NBA Rookies in making big plays in clutch time. He leads in PPG (2.7) in the clutch, 4th in FG%, 3rd in 3pt% and 4th in eFG% in clutch time. It’s impressive when you notice that he is only behind Ben Simmons, Jayson Tatum, and Dillion Brooks in FG. Mitchell is only behind Dillion Brooks and Jayson Tatum in 3pt%.

He is going to be good in the NBA for many years to come.
