Wednesday X’s & O’s – New Mexico, Purdue Boilermakers, Texas Tech, and Orlando

Here are four plays from the New Mexico Lobos, Purdue Boilermakers, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Orlando Magic. New Mexico has started the season 7-5 and are 6-0 at home in Albuquerque. Purdue is ranked #15 in the country and are off to a 10-2 start. The Boilermakers will finish up non-conference play tonight against Norfolk State. The Texas Tech play comes from former Head Coach Tubby Smith. Smith is now with the Memphis Tigers and has them sitting at 8-3 with a win most recently over Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. Texas Tech, now under the leadership of new head coach Chris Beard, are 10-1 and play this afternoon against Longwood to finish up pre-Christmas competition. The Red Raiders will begin Big 12 play on December 30th at Iowa State. Lastly, the Orlando Magic won last night against the Miami Heat in double overtime and are now 13-17 to start the year under new head coach Frank Vogel.

New Mexico – Head Coach Craig Neal

This play was used by Craig Neal to get an isolation look in a low clock situation. The play isolates the guard on the right wing and lets him go to work for a last second shot.

Purdue Boilermakers – Head Coach Matt Painter

Weave Flash Post Up

Purdue Boilermakers X's and O's

Purdue has phenomenal big men inside, and Coach Matt Painter uses this play to get a high-low look from his bigs.

Texas Tech – Head Coach Tubby Smith

Horns Rip Single

Purdue

This horns set play uses a quick screen-the-screener action to get a shot for the guard at the top of the key. The play also gets an open look for 4 posting up inside if x4 gets caught on the back screen.

Orlando Magic – Head Coach Frank Vogel

SLOB Corner PNR

This sideline out of bounds play from Frank Vogel is a counter to most of the zipper action SLOBs used in the NBA. 1 fakes the zipper cut and instead cuts out to the corner. 3 clears away to the weak side and 5 sets a ball screen for 1 in the corner. This action can be tough for teams to defend as it creates a lot of space for 1 to attack middle if he can get some clearance on the ball screen from 5.
