I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Learn the Beat the Pro Shooting Drills that will help your players with shooting!

Going take it back to an iconic basketball movie where one of the most epic matchups in history took place… classic underdog story as a group of cartoon characters and a retired basketball player take on a group of Monsters with NBA talent…. Yes, I am talking about Space Jam. Specifically I am talking about the “Secret Potion” that the looney tunes drank at halftime to give them their edge against the MonStars in the second half… but as the game closed and they got tired and asked for the “secret stuff”… MJ said something that holds so true. There was no magic potion, that was just water. “It was just you” as he said to the looney tunes before they eventually dethroned the might MonStars with Jordan’s epic stretch dunk that every kid from the 90’s talked about for years.

Now, why am I talking about this? Players want the microwave version of success, 60 seconds or less. If they can’t succeed at it immediately, they move on to a different move, a different method of learning or even a different coach or team altogether. There is very little patience for the process… they want the “Secret Potion” to reach their goals…. But there is no secret potion… “It’s just you” and a little friend called repetition…

A competitive shooting exercise we use with high school-NBA level players works on efficiency and repetition… without either, you will not succeed in this game as a shooter. Or any role at that. We put a few goals with it so as players you can see where you measure up and as coaches, you can put your players to the test to see where they really stand as true competitive shooters in the clutch moments having to knock down shots for time.
