I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Post Development Drills by Wes Kosel

Here are some small-group post development drills that work on basic footwork, shooting form, attacking the rim, and finishing close to the basket. The first drill is a post flash drill. In this drill, 2 coaches are on the wings, and the players are underneath the basket. To start the drill, Player 1 posts up hard and on the skip from Coach 1 to Coach 2, Player 1 flashes to the middle of the lane. Coach 2 then passes to Player 1, and performs the designated move. After Player 1 shoots, he rebounds his own shot and moves to the end of the line. After Player 1 has flashed, Player 2 passes the ball to Coach 1 and posts up hard at the block. The drill continues as Coach 1 skips the pass to Coach 2. In series 2, 4, and 6 the BIG step is used. This is a step with the right or left foot that doesn’t cross the body. For example, in Frame 2, as Player 2 flashes to the lane his right foot will plant and he will perform a BIG step toward the left side of the rim with his left foot. In series 3, 5, and 7 the cross-step is used. This is a step that crosses the body and is opposite in direction of a BIG step.

Post Flash Shooting:
1st series: Jump Shot
2nd series: Shot-fake, BIG step for a lay-up
3rd series: Shot-fake, cross-step for a lay-up
4th series: Shot-fake, BIG step, pivot and spin for a lay-up
5th series: Shot-fake, cross-step, pivot and spin for a lay-up
6th series: Shot-fake, BIG step, 1 dribble jump shot
7th series: Shot-fake, cross-step, 1 dribble jump shot
8th series: Flash and back-cut (use this cut when a defender guards the flash)

The next drill is a 3 man continuous posting drill. To begin the drill, Player 2 and 3 both have a ball. 1 flashes toward the 3 and receives a pass after posting up. Player 1 then performs the designated move, rebounds the ball, and replaces Player 3 at the wing. After passing to the post, Player 3 cuts to the opposite side of the lane and receives a pass from Player 2. The drill is continuous, and each player performs each series three times.
3 Man Continuous Posting
1st. series: Drop-step baseline
2nd series: Drop-step middle
3rd series: Reverse pivot face-up jump shot
4th series: Reverse pivot face-up, cross-step 1 dribble finish at the rim.
