Point Guard College Glazier 2014 Clinic Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Point Guard College Glazier 2014 Clinic Notes

Point Guard College and Glazier Clinics have joined forces together to have one of the best clinics in 2014. I have always had coaches that went to the Point Guard College and loved their stuff. I am familiar with Glazier Clinics from the football side of things. They had several speakers at this clinic like Tyler Coston that talked about how to develop leaders. Your point guard must be the leader on the basketball court. He talked about how to grow your leaders / point guards and the 5 most important qualities of a point guard. He discussed how to cast a vision for your point guard and show them the way to grow. He gave the coaches some ideas on how to mentor your point guard and make him learn what you want and need from him.

Tom Kelsey from LSU talked about how to bounce back from personal setbacks. He talked about the level of setbacks and how to handle boys versus girls. He gives you some very helpful hints with your players. He shows you how to develop trust with your players.

Dean Lockwood talked about how to build a competitive culture with your basketball program. He talks about helping out coaches out and being a “reader” in your downtime like this summer. That is when you can gain knowledge. He quotes Jon Gordon quite a bit and I love his positive concepts for building a winning a culture in the business field. It is something that will translate to the locker room. He also talks about how to evaluate your program. What he wants and needs from his Point Guard. He will give you a 10 step plan on how to develop your competitive culture.
