Piston Action Set Plays by Wes Kosel
Here are four piston action set plays from four different teams: LSU, Texas Southern, Kentucky, and Lafayette. In our offense, we call a cut across the free-throw line with the posts at the elbow a piston cut. You will often see it in a 1-4 high set with the wings exchanging spots (one player going under the posts at the free-throw line and the other player cutting above). In this pdf, the piston action is shown from a 1-4 high set and horns set. Of course, you can adjust almost any formation to create a similar action.
Piston Action Set Plays – 1-4 High Piston – LSU Tigers
In this 1-4 high set play, 1 passes to 4 then cuts through to the opposite corner. 2 moves down to the low post as 3 makes the piston cut from the wing around both posts at the elbows. On this cut, 3 is looking to get a hand-off or pass from 4. 2 sets a back-screen for 5 who looks to cut to the block for an open shot.
Piston Action Set Plays – 1-4 High Piston Repeat – Texas Southern Tigers
2 and 3 exchange wings with a piston cut. If neither is open, the action is repeated with 5 and 4 specifically screening 3’s defender on the cut. 1 passes to 3 then screen for 5 at the elbow. 5 sprints into a ball-screen for 3. 3 drives middle and looks to shoot or pass to 4 posting up on the right side.
Piston Action Set Plays – Piston Loop – Kentucky Wildcats
2 cuts to the corner and 3 makes a piston cut around 4 and 5. If 3 isn’t open, 1 passes in to 4 at the high post. 4 then looks to pass to 5 stepping out who looks for the hi/lo pass to 3 inside.
Piston Action Set Plays – Horns Piston – Lafayette Leopards
3 loops around 5 and 4 as 2 replaces 3 in the corner. If 3 isn’t open, 1 cuts around 5 looking for a hand-off. If he gets the ball, 1 dribbles off of a staggered ball-screen from 5 and 4.
