Pick-the-Picker Playbook

Below are several pick-the-picker plays from the NBA, international, and college levels. Pick-the-picker, or PTP, plays allow for quick combo action set of screens that put the defense in a tough spot guarding multiple screens. Typically, the first screener will be open as the second cutter if his defender has to help on the first screen that is set. Defending PTP actions requires good communication and a plan of action. Typically, PTP actions are used in a cross screen / down screen situation, but can also be used in ball screens and back screens. The plays were pulled from NBA teams (Washington Wizards and Golden State Warriors), NCAA Division 1 teams (Kentucky Wildcats, Cal Bears, Duke Blue Devils, Oklahoma Sooners), NCAA Division III (Wisconsin-Platteville), and International (Finland). There are six man plays included, one BLOB, and one SLOB.

Pick-the-Picker Playbook – Washington Wizards – 1-4 High Double PTP

In this play, the PTP combo action comes from a double back screen into a down screen for John Wall to get a shot.

Pick-the-Picker Playbook – Kentucky Wildcats – 1-4 High PTP

1 pushes the 2 guard into the lane to set a back-screen for 5. 4 then screens down to open up a shot for 2. The shot will especially be open when x2 has to help on 5’s cut to the block.

ptp2

Pick-the-Picker Playbook – Finland – 4-Out PTP

This is a flex action play with 2 setting a cross screen from the corner and 4 screening down for 2.

ptp3

Pick-the-Picker Playbook – Cal Bears – Ball Screen PTP

This is a very creative way to use a PTP action with the second screen in the PTP coming straight from a ball-screen in the slot. This could be very effective against a team that hard hedges.

Pick-the-Picker Playbook – Duke Blue Devils – Box PTP

In a similar fashion, Coach K uses the ball-screen in combination with PTP to get an open shot at the top of the key.

Pick-the-Picker Playbook – Oklahoma Sooners – Corner Stagger PTP

This play gets the defense moving and was used by Oklahoma to get Buddy Hield an open shot at the top of the key after setting a back screen for the big man.

ptp6

Pick-the-Picker Playbook – Wisconsin-Platteville – BLOB Box PTP

In this baseline out-of-bounds play, 3 screens for 5 and 2 screens for 3. If x3 has to help on the cut by 5, 3 will be wide open for a shot in the corner.

ptp7

Pick-the-Picker Playbook – Golden State Warriors – SLOB PTP

5 screens in for 2 under the basket then gets a down screen from 4. 1 passes to 5 for a shot.
