Notre Dame Maui Invitational

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

This past week will go down as one of the best weeks of college basketball of all time. We have been treated to a bunch of high-level pre-season basketball tournaments, highlighted by the PK80 Invitational in Portland, OR. But one of the most thrilling games we were treated to came from the Notre Dame Maui Invitational championship game. The championship game pitted two of the country’s best, #6 Wichita State and #13 Notre Dame.

The Maui Invitational has produced a lot of classic games, and this one would be no different. Notre Dame, after trailing by 16 at one point, put together a gritty comeback against one of the nation’s stingiest and toughest teams to win the 2017 championship 67-66.

They never lost their poise when Wichita State got out to the big lead, using zone to slow the Shockers down. Notre Dame found ways to make huge plays down the stretch, capped by Mike Brey’s beautifully drawn up baseline out of bounds play. The Irish, trailing 66-65 with 3 seconds to play came out of the timeout and executed their baseline OB play to perfection- Geben slipping to the basket and being fouled leading two free throws. Martinas Geben then stepped up and knocked down both free throws to give Notre Dame the 1-point lead and eventual victory.

The Maui Invitational had a list of champions that included some of the best college basketball programs: Arizona, North Carolina, Kansas, and Duke.

Mike Brey always thought that his team belonged to those other teams. Now they have a gritty comeback win against the nation’s top teams.

They wanted to put their name up on the wall in Maui. This is the first Maui title for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
