NBA Insider – Brad Stevens Pin Series by Wes Kosel
Here are two plays from Boston Celtics Head Coach Brad Stevens. The two plays were clipped by Brandon Chambers, who is a video coordinator for the Nevada Wolfpack under Head Coach Eric Musselman. Stevens has been with the Boston Celtics since he left Butler in 2013. Stevens played Division III basketball at DePauw and then started his coaching career at Butler as an assistant coach in 2001. In 2007, Stevens took over as head coach and led the Bulldogs to back-to-back championship game appearances in 2010 and 2011. He was named Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010 and received the Clair Bee Coach of the Year Award in 2011. The Pin Series playbook features two plays from Coach Stevens.
Boston Celtics – Brad Stevens Pin Series
4 screens down for 3 to start the play and 1 passes to 3 from the right wing. Once 3 has the ball, 2 cuts through the screens from 4 and 5, rubbing off of the high side of 4 and then curling tight around 5 at the left elbow. On the curl, 3 looks to hit 2 for a shot in the lane. If x4 or x5 has to help, 4 or 5 may be open on a slip or pop as well.
Pin Hit 5 Out
This play starts with a high ball screen from 5 for the point guard. 3 pins down for 4 on the left block and 1 passes to 4 at the mid wing. Once 4 has the ball, the rest of the players space out on the perimeter (3 cuts out to the left wing, 1 slides over, 5 moves out to the corner and 2 lifts). 4 can now look to drive 1 on 1 and sore or force the defense to collapse and kick out to a teammate on the 3-point line. 3 can also look to post up before cutting out once 4 first gets the ball.
