Mike Rice Re-screen Motion Offense Notes by Jon Giesbrecht

Early Pick and Roll Attack

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Mike Rice Re-screen Motion Offense Notes by Jon Giesbrecht

General Summary
In short, the re-screen motion offense is continuous paired screening (Guard+ Big, Guard +
Forward). Constant movement allows driving lanes, occupying the weak-side help. The general
philosophy behind the re-screen offense is to get to the middle of floor (Getting in the paint-
creating angles- passing angles- which create situations for catch and shoot or closeout basketball).

Traditionally the ball is reversed from side to side through passing, instead the re-screen changes
sides of the floor with the dribble (attack opposite elbow). By exchanging sides of the floor multiple times in one possession, the defense begins to break-down. There are six screens off-ball screens used in the offense: Pinch, Flare, Down, Back, Slice, and Flat. To initiate re-screen, Mike Rice/Andy Toole have ran secondary breaks (“Mount” and “Chest”), entries, and screening actions. Entries such as “chase” (dribble through to a ball-screen), “split” flashing high post into dribble handoff for wing, “swing” Iverson cut to ball screen. Screening actions- both sides down screen, flare screen, pinch, etc screen simultaneously.

Benefits | Mike Rice Re-screen Motion Offense Notes
-Positions can be interchangeable.
-Multiple offensive players get shots
-Promotes middle penetration- while occupying weak-side
-Opponents are forced to guard multiple actions- off-ball screens, ball screens, dribble handoffs
-Wears opponents down physically
-Brings defensive bigs away from basket. (Must guard ball screens/dribble handoffs)

Drawbacks | Mike Rice Re-screen Motion Offense Notes
-Guards must be able to dribble over (on reverse) without turning the ball over.
-Poor shooting can be tough against teams that sag
-Players must be in great shape… Can’t stand.
Must Do’s
1. Sprint to set screens, walk to use them
2. Communicate screens by name (Ex. “Pinch, Pinch, Pinch!”)

3. Guards must be able to handball pressure, h.ile executing dribble moves and passes –

4. Must be able to adjust to the switch (Slip, screen own man)
5. Players must continue to re-screen even though possession could get ugly. Never back out and run
play.
6. Continue to screen and re-screen. Cannot sit and watch when on weak-side.
Unselfish movement
7. Must be patient against teams that can defend. Dribble reverse multiple times to break defense.
8. Always screen low (low block- paint) or high (3pt line) … never screen in middle.

Must Practice
1. Defensively practice switch and non-switch (stations)- ultimately getting to practice against
both.
2. Teach in combinations in breakdown drills (Ex Pinch to flare – Players will understand the
utilization of different screens in different areas)
3. Each player should be able to play every position – perform actions.
4. Footwork. (Footwork on jump-shot screens, attacking rim screens, etc)

Teaching Progression
—A lot of reps in 2 on 2 breakdown.
• 2 on 0 Dummy combinations (Pairing up Bigs and Guards)- Ex Pinch to Down, Flare to Pinch, Slice
to Down
• Shooting Drills that emphasize getting shots pinch, flare, down, etc.
• 2 on 2 Dummy until action- Ex Flare into a ball screen
• Straight 2 on 2 (Paired up guard and bigs)- give combinations
• Italian Drill to teach basic actions (Learn dribble hand-offs etc)
• Polish Drill
• 2 on 2 Catch Drill
• 4 on 0 – Laker cut, dribble handoffs
• Dummy Re-screen 5 on 0- 5 passes to a score… Who re-screens best

General Breakdown | Mike Rice Re-screen Motion Offense Notes
3 Guards, 1 Forward, and 1 Post Position Breakdown Bigs/Forwards
• Head hunters- must screen people. Sprint to set screens.
• On dribble hand-offs, must attack defender.
• Nice if bigs/forwards can shoot it.
• On perimeter catch- looks to dribble handoffs or go into ball-screen with guard in corner – unless
straight line drive available.
• If pass goes over head of big/forward after screening (usually flare screen)- automatic ball
screen.

Guards | Mike Rice Re-screen Motion Offense Notes
• When initiating offense, PG must handle pressure and enter ball to wing. Poised.
• Guards must look to turn corner when coming off off-ball screens, ball screens, dribble handoffs
— Get to the middle.
• Options on perimeter catch 1. Shot/Drive 2. Look inside 3. Change sides with dribble
(Opposite elbow- shorten pass, scoring opportunity to turn corner)
• On pass inside to big, Iaker cut.
• 95% fill same side on wing entry pass. Before filling same side corner- must read defense. If
guard on wing rejects ball screen or big fakes dribble handoff, must space out
Situations

Wing Entry to Guard
• Options 1. Look to score (drive or shot) 2. Inside 3. Dribble Reverse

Wing Entry to Big
• Options 1. Shot/Drive (Depending on personnel) 2. Dribble handoff/ball screen for guard in
corner.

When Guard Screening for Big…
• Always “pops” to three point line (Unless coach wants to expose a mismatch inside for guard)

Screening Combinations
Pinch to Flare/Flare to Pinch, Down to Back/Back to Down, Down to Slice/Slice to Down
—To change the screen.. Cutter must change angle

When Guard is exiting…
• Must read what offensive wing player does…
• If he dribbles over to other side of floor… attacks middle off hand-off ball screen – He must
fill out the same side he passed to.
• If the offensive wing rejects ball screen… drives baseline… passes ball inside to
post… He must space out to opposite side.
