Mike Krzyzewski Duke Blue Devils 1-4 High Lob Play by Wes Kosel

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Mike Krzyzewski Duke Blue Devils 1-4 High Lob Play by Wes Kosel

Here is a 1-4 high set play from Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Coach K liked to run this play for Jabari Parker at the 4 position. Parker led the team in points per game, rebounds per game, and blocks per game. At 6’8”, Parker was a beast for the Blue Devils as a freshman. Coach K has had his share of star players, but Parker may be one of his best. The Blue Devils finished 26-9 this season losing to Mercer in the NCAA Tournament. In 39 years of coaching, Coach K only has 4 losing seasons (2 at Army, 2 at Duke), and he hasn’t had a losing season since 1982-1983. One of the greatest coaches off all time, he probably won’t have another losing season for the rest of his career.

Mike Krzyzewski Duke Blue Devils – 1-4 High Lob Play

The play starts with 2 and 3 on the wings (free-throw line extended) and the 4 and 5 at the elbows. For this play, Parker is at the 4 spot. The point guard passes to 3 on the wing, then makes a UCLA cut off of 4 (Parker) to the low post. If open, 3 passes to 1 for a lay-up. If 1 isn’t open, Parker steps out to set a ball-screen for 3. 3 drives toward the middle of the floor looking to get to the basket or take an open shot. As Parker is rolling to the basket after the screen, 1 steps up to set a back-screen on Parker’s defender. 3 looks to make a lob pass to Parker for a dunk. If that isn’t open, 3 passes out to 5 who looks inside to Parker posting up. Now Parker has the entire lane to work his man 1 on 1.
