Mark Turgeon Horns Set Plays by Wes Kosel
Below are three set plays from Maryland Terrapins Head Coach Mark Turgeon. The playbook includes three plays out of a horns, or “A” set. Turgeon, a Kansas alumn, played at Kansas under Larry Brown, and started coaching at Kansas in 1987. From Kansas, Turgeon went on to be an assistant at Oregon from 1992-1997 and then was in the NBA for one season as an assistant. He got his first head coaching hob at Jacksonville State in 1998 and then took over as head coach for the Wichita State Shockers in 2000. After that, he was the head coach for the Texas A&M Aggies from 2007-2011, and has been leading the Terrapins since then. In all, Turgeon has a 364-218 record and a 114-59 record at Maryland. His first season with Jacksonville State he won eight games. This past season, Turgeon and his Terrapins went 27-9.

Horns Over the Top
1 passes to 5 at the high post and cuts over 5 to the corner as if he is going to screen. Instead, 1 slips to the rim as 3 cuts up to the wing. 5 passes to 1 if he is open on the slip, but if not 5 passes to 3 for a shot.
Horns Stagger
1 dribbles off of a high staggered ball screen from 4 and 5. 4 rolls into the lane as 5 steps out for a shot.
Horns Weak Pin
1 dribbles off of a high ball screen from 5 dribbling towards the left wing. 1 looks to turn the corner, but if it isn’t open 1 passes to 5 popping out after the screen. 5 first looks to shoot, but if he isn’t open 4 sets a down screen for 2 in the corner. 2 has plenty of space to make a scoring cut off of the screen.
