Leonard Hamilton Florida State Seminoles Offense by Wes Kosel
Here are two set plays from Florida State Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. Hamilton is entering his 13th year as Head Coach of the Seminoles. This past season, the Seminoles went 22-14 and finished the season losing to Minnesota in the NIT Semifinals. During the season, the Seminoles had big wins over VCU, Notre Dame, and Georgetown. FSU struggled with the big boys of the ACC (Virginia, Syracuse, Duke, and UNC), but still finished in the top half of the conference. Before taking over for the Seminoles, Hamilton was the Head Coach of the NBA Washington Wizards, Miami Hurricanes, and Oklahoma State Cowboys. After his playing days at Tennessee-Martin, Hamilton was an assistant coach at Austin Peay and Kentucky (under Joe B. Hall). He has received several awards including UPI National Coach of the Year in 1995, Big East Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1999, and ACC Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2012.
Leonard Hamilton Florida State Seminoles Offense – 2-3 Baseline Stagger
In this play, the trailer is being denied. 4 steps towards 1 as if setting a screen but instead makes a hard cut to the basket. 1 looks for 4 on the cut or can pass to 3 filling the spot that 4 left. 4 and 5 then set a staggered screen for 2 who cuts across the baseline looking for a shot. If 2 doesn’t have a shot, 4 screens up for 3 who cuts to the basket for a lob. A second option off of this play is if the baseline cut isn’t open. If this happens, 5 screens in for 4 and 5 screens up for 1. 4 looks to shoot or make the lob pass to 1.
Leonard Hamilton Florida State Seminoles Offense – 2-3 DHO Stagger
1 dribbles toward 2 in the corner and gives him the ball on a dribble hand-off. Once 2 has the ball he passes to 4 then cuts off of a screen from 5. 4 looks to pass to 2 on the cut or can pass to 3 on the wing. 3 looks inside to 2 posting up or for 1 cutting off of a staggered screen from 4 and 5.
