Wes Kosel will enter his first season as an Assistant Coach at Augustana University under Tom Billeter in 2016-2017. Kosel came to Sioux Falls after two season at Colorado College as the lead assistant. Kosel, a native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, served as an assistant coach at Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Texas Lutheran University from 2012-2014. Kosel graduated from the University of Kansas in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He also has a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Houston. While attending Kansas, Kosel served as an assistant coach at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. A life-long student of the game, Kosel honed his coaching skills by working summer camps for various programs in Texas, Colorado, Missouri, and New Mexico. Kosel also is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a Certified Personal Trainer, both of which are certifications earned through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Kosel and his wife, Molly, live in Colorado Springs.

Larry Shyatt Wyoming Cowboys Offense by Wes Kosel

Attached are two plays from Wyoming Head Coach Larry Shyatt. Shyatt just finished his 5th season as head coach of Wyoming and 10th season overall. In 10 years, he has won almost 200 games. At Wyoming, he hasn’t had any losing seasons and had a career best 25  wins during the 2014-2015 season. Shyatt got his coaching start in 1973 as an assistant coach at Akron. He then would hold assistant positions at Utah, Cleveland State, New Mexico, Providence, Clemson, and Florida. He got his first head coaching job at Wyoming in 1997. He stayed for one season then took the head coaching job at Clemson. After leaving Clemson in 2003, he was an assistant at Florida and in 2011 came back to Wyoming as the head coach. 2014-2015 was his first NCAA Tournament appearance as a head coach. The Cowboys went 11-7 in the Mountain West Conference but won the Mountain West Conference Tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Larry Shyatt Wyoming Cowboys Offense – Cowboy Secondary

1 passes to 2 on the wing then cuts around 5 to the opposite corner. 4 moves towards 2 and sets a ball-screen on the wing. As 2 drives middle, 5 flashes high and 4 pops to the short corner. Once 5 has the ball, 3 loops around looking for a hand-off. If that isn’t there, 5 dribbles to the corner and gives the ball to 1 on a dribble hand-off.

1 passes to 2 then cuts around a staggered screen on the baseline to the left corner. As 1 is cutting, 2 dribbles towards the top of the key and 3 replaces 2. 2 passes to 1 on the left wing. 5 flashes to the high post looking for the pass from 1. 5 then dribbles towards the right elbow to give 2 the ball on a dribble hand-off. As that is happening, 4 flashes high and 1 screens down for 3. Once 4 has the ball he can shoot or give the ball to 3 on a dribble hand-off.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), both certifications given through the National Strength & Conditioning Association. He has coached summer AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, USA Basketball, University of Houston, Colorado, New Mexico, Air Force, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Kosel is also a member of the NABC International Committee and serves as the committee’s social media manager.
