Larry Brown SMU Ball Screen Offense by Wes Kosel
Here are three ball screen set plays from former Southern Methodist University Head Coach Larry Brown. Brown, who retired this off-season, has won 230 games as a college head coach at UCLA, Kansas, and SMU. He won the 1988 NCAA Championship at Kansas with Danny Manning. Brown also coached in the NBA for several teams including the Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers, Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, and Charlotte Bobcats. He won an NBA Championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004.
The plays below use ball screens, which Coach Brown utilized with his start guard Nic Moore.
Southern Methodist Mustangs Ball Screen Offense
Swing High PNR
The ball is reversed so that Nic Moore can dribble from the right wing to the top of the key and use a high ball screen. Defending Moore this distance can be difficult as he gains speed attacking the middle.
Piston Side PNR
The Mustangs run a piston action to get the ball to the wing and use the big that is closest to set a ball screen. This action is continuous for the Mustangs and is used throughout the game.
Slice Floppy
This play often scores before a ball screen is set, but whoever the ball goes to out of the floppy action can receive a ball screen if nothing is there on the cut. The floppy action is the point guard choosing whether to use a double or single screen under the basket. Once he makes up his mind, the bottom screener in the double screen then makes a cut to the opposite side of the floor.
