4 Defensive Ideas in the Josh Pastner 2017 Nike Championship Basketball Clinic Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Coach Pastner always wanted to play in the NBA, but once he saw the NBA coaches drawing up plays and stomping around on the floor, he was hooked. He had just discovered the next best thing to playing in the NBA.

Coach Pastner figured out what he needed to do to be the best coach that he could be. He needed to get the best players out there. As a teenager, he went to AAU games looking for great players. Coach Pastner would stay in the gym scouting players in the morning, noon, and night. He kept track of all the players that he wanted on his squad.

When he was thirteen, he created a scouting report about the local high school basketball players in Houston. He would send out his reports to tons of colleges across the country. He didn’t sell it either. His father was an AAU coach too and told them that Josh just wanted to do it for fun.

When he was sixteen, his dream came true. Coach Pastner’s dad lets him coach his AAU team which was called the Houston Hoops. As an AAU coach, Josh coached NBA players like Daniel Gibson, T.J. Ford, and Emeka Okafor.

Now, it’s thirty years later, and that little boy is now a man with a wife and kid. Coach Pastner is the head coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. His gym which is McCamish Pavilion holds 8600 people at a time. Josh Pastner knows that determination pays off.

Coach Pastner just completed his first season at Georgia Tech after eight seasons at the University of Memphis. He was an assistant coach under John Calipari and then got the job when Coach Cal left for the University of Kentucky job.

Taking over for Coach Calipari at Memphis was a challenge since he won over ninety percent of his basketball games. Coach Calipari won more games in those four years than in the history of the NCAA. Nobody wanted to follow Coach Cal at Memphis except Josh Pastner.  You will see his passion in the Josh Pastner 2017 Nike Championship Basketball Clinic Notes.

Coach Pastner felt that he was in the right spot at the right time when he got that job. Josh didn’t have a clue that Memphis was going to offer him the head coaching job. He was prepared to go with Coach Cal to Kentucky.

Memphis is a great basketball city. The city has talented basketball players and music. It’s known for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and many other recording artists. Coach Pastner felt all the pressure on his shoulders as he took over the job.

Coach Pastner didn’t let the momentum go when he took over. He tied Coach Cal to be the fastest coach to get 150 victories, and they won over seventy percent of their games. You will see some of his passion in these Josh Pastner 2017 Nike Championship Basketball Clinic Notes.

Coach Pastner lived and died with every loss and eventually, the phone rang for him, and it set him on a new path. It was Georgia Tech calling and wanting him to be their basketball coach. He had ever stepped foot on their campus, but he needed a change. It was the fresh start that he needed.

Georgia Tech is in the ACC Conference which is the best basketball conference in the nation. Georgia Tech was down, but they wanted to get back up. They had success with Bobby Cremins and wanted to get back in the NCAA Tournament again.

He knew that they need to do a rebuild and that isn’t easy, but he was up to the coaching challenge. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets got upset wins over North Carolina, Florida State, and Notre Dame. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets just barely missed going to the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Pastner knows that Alignment is massive on a championship team. Everything has to be in the right place from coaching staff to the players. Everyone has to be on the right page. If they aren’t aligned, then a team will never reach its full growth.

Coach Pastner has found a home now. He has realized his childhood dream is all too real and isn’t going to take it for granted. Coach Pastner tells his players that they have to only “do their job” and makes sure that each one of them has an appreciation for the journey.

The biggest lesson that Coach Pastner has learned is to be grateful and appreciate his players. They have a close knit group because they have bonded as a team and that is huge. It’s a life lesson in the making.
