John Calipari Kentucky Wildcats Double Rip Play by Adam Spinella
Maybe it’s because there’s so much raw talent on the team. Maybe it is because the ‘Cats are unbeaten and the media focuses on legacy of this team. Maybe it’s because they’re a team that is and has been centered around dribble-drive motion. But John Calipari and the Wildcats’ offense has been very rarely investigated this year just to see what they’re running. It’s so easy to assume that Kentucky is focused on getting the ball inside and are athletic enough to score no matter what. But Kentucky’s offense is much more nuanced than that. Here is a set they ran multiple times against Notre Dame in the Elite Eight to get a post-up for Karl-Anthony Towns.
As 1 comes down in transition, he comes off a drag screen from Towns as the 4 and the trailer. While this goes on, 2 and 3 will cross underneath the hoop and exchange sides of the floor. As soon as 4 sets the ball screen, he comes off a double back screen from 2 and from 5 to curl to the block. 1 passes to 3 on the wing, and 3 looks to get the ball into 4 in the post.
Kentucky runs this entirely based on personnel. Towns loves the left offensive block, so they run this play to get him there frequently. Additionally, Devin Booker is usually the 2 and is one of the screeners to get 4 into the post. That way Booker is on the opposite side of the floor to prevent a double-team from the opposite side.
