John Beilein 2009 BCAM Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Attacking defensive pressure: need DRILL work   |  John Beilein 2009 BCAM Notes

– 2-ball stuff /// volley ball back & forth (circle-width) w/one hand, back up, add dribble, 2
dribbles, cross & cross back, cross & bring back to original hand, etc.
– 2 on 0 passing – catch with jump stop (2 feet)
– SNAP pass (hit a “back-cutter” pass
– SNAP, SWEEP, BOUNCE (1 ball / 2 balls back & forth (2 passes), including 2-hand overhead SNAP)
– Baseball (stand “sidesaddle” / with 2 balls) / practice long diagonal / a press killer!
(“sidesaddle” / even man throwing ball inbounds)
– Retreat dribble – right & left
– 2 balls / get 3-5 hard dribbles (individually) with head up & catch //// GREAT ONE!
– 3 balls (2 people – juggling?) – allow one to go / revolving between the two players

Breakdown drills  |  John Beilein 2009 BCAM Notes
– Gauntlet / players make two “lanes, 1 on 1 with a “trapper” waiting @ ½ court / the object for
the dribbler is to go THROUGH & score (no spin dribbles) // get 11 seconds
////// then go 2 on 2 with a “trapper” waiting over ½ court – go to score, & overplay in- bounds
pass. (no gauntlet or lines of players)

Ultimate Game: vs. pressing team (may add an extra defender to trap, confuse, etc.)
– 5 on 5 (no dribbles)
– 5 on 5 with 1 dribble (jump stops / balance)
– 5 on 5 ½ court
– 4 on 5 full ct (extra player – ½ ct. trapper) / free lance offense, don’t allow to get over ½
court //// CATCH, LOOK, GO!!!!!!!!!!!
2 on 1 after “beating” press: end of press
– 2 on 1 “surprise”
– 1 player goes to block (ahead / do NOT stay even)
– Attack away from block-man with ball / make the play
Tell them: “being pressed is the best thing that could happen to us!” (build confidence)

Vs. a team when we are NOT SURE what they will do:
– 5 on 5 plus 1 or 2 extra players (full or ½ ct) / must learn to adjust on the move
– Sometimes have “extra” jump-in at ½ to confuse, bother, trap, etc., and stay a few passes
Vs. 1-4 press offense  |  John Beilein 2009 BCAM Notes
– Sidesaddle
– Plant & go / either way
– Practice diagonals vs. press (after ball reversal)
– Take ball out slowly (let it bounce?) / get everyone situated – no hurry
– Run baseline with LEVERAGE (pivoting, footwork, reverse pivot into inbounds pass with TWO
HANDS)
Attack after beating presses / make them PAY!

The ball “talks” to you when it “sees” you!
Yo-Yo action in press-offense / ball reversal with in & out movement! GREAT!!!!!!!!
