Joe Scott Denver Pioneers BLOB Plays by Wes Kosel
Attached are three baseline out-of-bounds plays from Denver Head Coach Joe Scott. Scott just completed his 15th season as a head coach. In that time, he has won over 200 games including 130 at the University of Denver. In 8 seasons at Denver, he has compiled a 130-117 record. Before taking over at Denver, Scott was the head coach at Princeton (2004 – 2007) and Air Force (2000 – 2004). Scott, a New Jersey native, played at Princeton and got his coaching start as an assistant at Monmouth. He was awarded the Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2004 after winning the Mountain West Conference Regular Season Championship. He also led Denver to a Western Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship in 2013 (Denver’s only year in the WAC).

In this play, the two guards start at the elbows and the forwards in the corners. 5 and 4 screen up for 2 and 3. If the corner options are not open, 2 and 3 move up towards half-court as 5 screens across the lane for 4. If 5 gets the ball he looks to drive. If 5 doesn’t have a shot, he passes out to 3 who passes to 2. 3 makes a back-cut then 5 sets a flare for 1.

2 cuts off of a double screen from 4 and 5 at the elbow. 1 passes to 2, then 4 and 5 move down to the corner to screen for 3. 1 moves out to the corner then makes a back-cut to the basket. 2 looks to pass to 3 for a shot or to 1 for a lay-up.

Instead of cutting off of the double screen, 2 makes a back-cut to the basket. If the cut isn’t open, the ball is passes from 4 to 5. 4 sets a down-screen for 1 on the baseline.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
