I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Jay Wright Villanova Wildcats Offense

I think that you like these plays from the Jay Wright Villanova Wildcats Offense. Coach Wright is one of the best X’s and O’s coaches in the profession.

Here is a snippet of what happened in last year’s National Championship game:

Jay Wright knew that his team wasn’t playing well in the National Championship game at halftime. This game was it, there weren’t any more chances to improve and only one goal left. They were at the finish line and weren’t playing very well.

Roy Williams had his team going strong with a 39-34 lead at halftime. If Villanova sixth man, Phil Booth, hadn’t had some offensive heroics, then the lead would have bigger.

NCAA Tournament has breaks that last twenty-five minutes than in the regular season twenty-minute breaks. Daniel Ochefu approached Coach Wright while he was talking with his assistant coaches. He went straight to his Head Coach and told him that “I got this.”

I had had former assistant coaches tell Coach Wright that he would have never let them talk to the team before he talked to them. With the National Championship on the line, Coach Wright felt that his senior captain earned the right to speak to the team.

Daniel told his teammates that they weren’t going down like this and that they need to finish this out by playing together, our way. Coach Wright knew that they need to out rebound the Tar Heels in the second half even if they had the size advantage.

North Carolina wasn’t a three-point shooting team, but they had hit seven three-pointers in the first half. Coach Wright told them that they had to defend, rebound, and play together. That if they could stop the easy baskets, then the Wildcats could get back in the game.

Instead of pressing in the second half, Coach Wright decided to play half-court man defense. Coach Wright had sheltered his team in the days leading up to the National Championship. The parents understood that Coach Wright was just trying to limit the distractions. The parents told them both to not worry about it. That they were all in and let’s go win this National Championship.
