Jay Wright 2012 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Keys to the offense | Jay Wright 2012 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes
1. The post must know where every one is (out of the way or to find gaps
2. On the ball reversal the post can sneak behind defense but will be open late.
3. Look for mismatches (opportune times to utilize slot reversal drives
4. Look to weak side exchange all ball screens (screener should pop)
5. Load for ball screens open up sides of the floor (think block)
6. Move players that aren’t being guarded, use them as screeners, naked ball screen
7. Roll to score but also roll to rebound
8. When post is fronted, teach post to seal (lobs, passes after ball reversal and ball screens will be more effective.

Using the offense against zone | Jay Wright 2012 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes
1. Always bounce pass into the zone (you can tell he plays Syracuse)
2. The ball handler must come of the ball screen as a shooter
3. The basket cut sit at the foul line to give a high post attack (looks to continue when ball is reversed)
4. Run the offense to score
5. Drive from the slot to make 2 guard 1
6. Screen the man guarding the ball
7. Reverse the ball to make a play

Late game scenarios | Jay Wright 2012 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes
1. If the team is trapping you must try to score
2. Reverse the ball to score (gets defense out of position)
3. Don’t hold the ball

Adapt don’t adopt
