Horns Offense – 6 Options by Wes Kosel

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Horns Offense – 6 Options by Wes Kosel

Here are 6 options to run out of the horns offensive set. The basic alignment for the horns, or “A” set, is the point guard up top, two posts at the high post position, and the two wing players in the corners. The Horns Offense set is very popular right now in the NBA. Teams like the Lakers, Heat, Timberwolves, Thunder, and Knicks are using it just to name a few. Horns is also being used in the college game. This season at TLU we have already played against several teams that have used Horns Offense, and at the division 1 level I have seen Duke and Michigan State use it as well. Horns Offense can be very effective at spreading the defense and opening up the middle of the floor for penetration and cutting opportunities. Here are 6 options out of the horns set.

Horns Offense Option 1: This option starts with an entry to the 5 at the high post. A staggered screen is then set for the 2 in the corner. If 2 is open he can take it to the basket or take the shot. If not, 4 turns around to pick for 2 with pick-and-roll opportunities.

Horns Offense Option 2: Again, an entry to the high post is used to start the play. Once 4 has the ball at the high post, 5 moves down to set a screen for 3 who makes a flex cut looking for a pass from 4 at the basket. 1 sets a wide down screen for 5. 4 can pass to 3 at the basket or 5 coming off the down screen from 1.

Horns Offense Option 3: 1 enters the ball to 5 at the high post. 5 passes to 3 who cuts to the wing, and 2 cuts across to the low block from the corner. This is a great option if you have a guard with good post-up abilities.

Horns Offense Option 4: 1 enters the ball to 5 at the high post, and then sets a wide down screen for 3. 5 hands the ball back to 3, then 4 sets a ball screen for 3. 3 then has the option to drive to the basket, hit 4 on the roll, hit 2 in the corner, or pass to 5 at the top of the key.

Horns Offense Option 5: In this option, one of the high post players steps up to set a ball screen for 1. Then the opposite post player screens the screener, and 1 looks to drive or hit the post on the fade. If these two options aren’t open, a ball screen is set for 1 with pick-and-roll action.

Horns Offense Option 6: The ball is passed to the high post with a screen and fade cut for the 1. Then the two post players are open to play a two-man game with pick-and-roll action. This is a good option if you have a big that can effectively put it on the floor to the basket.

I hope you enjoy these options out of the horns offense.
