Guard 3pt zone shooting drills by Mark Chapman
This post was taken from different teams over the years and is great for guard development drills in the preseason through the regular season. It’s important for players to be able to punch gaps with the dribble and draw two defenders which opens up teammates if a good pass can be made. These zone shooting drills should be run with no defense until players understand where to drive, why they’re driving, and how to back dribble out of the zone.
1) The first diagram uses two players. (If you want to simulate a zone have the pass come from the other lane line to start the drill). . . the dribble is to simulate driving after a ball reversal on the outside of the two guards at the top. Player should draw the bottom defender and the offensive guard is relocating to be in good position to shoot.
2) The second frame can be used for any zone because a drive to the high post is ALWAYS good. Many coaches have called this are the zone killer which is why most will try to find some way to get the ball there. After the drive to the high post the skip pass is to the guard on the opposite side. Have players work against cones representing the defense so they can see where the gaps will be.
3) The third diagram has multiple parts. This is a penetrate and pitch but the shooter is sliding in behind the drive and hitting the shot at the top. The driver then relocates to the opposite wing where he/she receives a skip pass for a shot. This movement will take players some time to get use to as the drive is going one direction and the slide behind is moving in another.
4) The last movement is off of transition. As the ball is advanced up the sideline the guard drives to the basket. When the defense is cut off he/she must find a teammate on the perimeter.
These options really help to rep good shots against a zone. Make sure players understand the importance of a good pass for the shooter and as the drill gets easier add defense for a more realistic view.
