Gregg Popovich San Antonio Spurs “Favorite” by Adam Spinella
It’s no secret that Tim Duncan is a great weapon to have on offense; he’s an effective finisher and passer out of the post, yet the Spurs don’t put a ton of set plays trying to get him the ball. He posts up off a double rip screen on the inbound, and the way the screens are set should get him wide open at the rim.
Tony Parker, the 1, takes it out. The Spurs start in a Box set, with Duncan (5) on the ball-side elbow. The bigs are up and the guards are on the blocks. Duncan gets the inbound from Parker, who comes back and gets the handoff from Duncan.
After the handoff, 4 (Tiago Splitter) comes to set a ball screen to free Parker to the wing. 2 and 3 will then raise to set a double rip screen for Duncan, who drops to the ball-side block. This gets him in great post-up position.
Watch how the play develops and how open Duncan is coming off the rip screens. The help defense follows the ball as Parker cuts across the floor; that allows Duncan to get low position for the catch.
