Gregg Marshall Wichita State Set Plays by Gibson Pyper
Gregg Marshall and Wichita State have had great success over the last few seasons and part of it is due to their great pressure defense as well as really good offensive sets. The ability to run different sets was their personnel with a great point guard and shooters at the 1 through 4 positions really forced the defense to work on every possession. You will love the Gregg Marshall Wichita State Set Plays.
Gregg Marshall Wichita State Set Plays: “AI (Iverson) Elevator”
One of the most common actions in the NCAA is the Iverson cut, or a guard cutting over the top of 4 & 5 at the elbows. This action has over 1o0 different sets you can run with it, in this case the 2 man who cuts over the top goes backdoor looking for a layup. 1 passes to 5 at the elbow, and 3 clears to the opposite corner taking his defender away. After the 5 man looks for 2 backdoor and it is covered, 4 sets a flare screen for the point guard and 5 passes to him on the wing over the top. As 5 passes to 1, the 2 man who is on the block cuts through elevator doors from 4 and 5 to the top of the key. A counter option that Wichita State has is the point guard can attack the basket since he caught the ball off the flare screen with an unused dribble.
Gregg Marshall Wichita State Set Plays: “Empty Pick & Roll”
Alot of what Wichita State runs on offense usually involves emptying a side of the floor before action to flow into their different sets. In this case the 2 man cuts to the wing and the 4 cuts to the corner, the point guard passes to 2 on the wing and cuts into the paint. When the point guard gets in the paint he cuts off a baseline screen to the corner off of 4 and 3 comes off a down screen from 5 to the top of the key and receives the pass from 2. 5 then steps up into a ballscreen for 3 to attack off of with the side of the floor empty and 4 in the short corner or “dunkers spot.”
Gregg Marshall Wichita State Set Plays: “Flare Double Back”
Throwback sets are some of my favorite sets to run as a coach and one of the most effective sets in the game of basketball if executed properly. Starting off with a 1 – 3 ballscreen on the wing in which the 3 man slips a ballscreen and cuts to the opposite wing. The 2 and 4 man both clear to the opposite corner and wing, and the point guard passes to 2 on the wing. After 2 receives the pass on the wing, 5 sets a backscreen for 3 to the basket then sets a flare screen for 1 who receives the passes from 2 on the wing. 1, with an unused dribble again, attacks the basket and 2 and 5 set a double throwback screen for 3, 1 passes to 3.
Gregg Marshall Wichita State Set Plays: “Pick & Roll Slip”
Wichita State runs this set against teams that hard hedge or aggressively defend the ballscreen. 1 cuts to the wing and receives the pass from 2 who cuts to the strong side corner. 4 lifts to the top of the key and 3 spaces the floor on the opposite wing, these two are key to maintaining spacing and allowing this set to work. 5 sprints out for a wing ballscreen for 1 but slips to the rim, as he slips 1 passes to 2 in the corner who hits 5 on the slip to the rim. This works because x5 will be high on the top side of the ballscreen so his ability to catch 5 on the slip will be late.
Gregg Marshall Wichita State Set Plays: “Rip”
The most common set and action in basketball, Wichita State has their own version of the rip or backscreen set for a quick score. Wichita State disguises it like floppy with the big man (typically a stretch 4 or a good shooter) settting the backscreen for the other big.
Gregg Marshall Wichita State Set Plays: “Slice Double”
Another common set is the Slice or Shuffle screen into a stagger screen, Wichita State looks to post up the player off the Slice screen and have a high ballscreen after the stagger screen.
