Gonzaga University Bulldogs Basketball Head Coach Mark Few – 2017 Nike Championship Clinic Notes

Gonzaga University Basketball

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Gonzaga University Bulldogs Basketball

The Gonzaga University Bulldogs Basketball Program is at an all-time high! Coach Few’s resume has him in the Hall of Fame. Coach Roy Williams got his National Championship, and it was sweet redemption for him after losing to Villanova on a last-second shot.

Coach Williams has three national championship titles to his basketball coaching legacy now. He is one of six college basketball coaches in the history of the game to accomplish that feat. After Theo Pinson had got the last rebound of the national championship and UNC won71-65, Coach Williams put his arms high and cracked a huge smile.

Coach Few was only 35 feet away and put his hands on his hips and accepted that his second loss of the season was in the national championship game. Few waited a couple of minutes while Coach Williams celebrated and then shook his hand.

Jim Boeheim from Syracuse University told Mark Few before the game that if he lost it that the loss would crush him. Coach Few took his first title game loss to Hall of Famer Roy Williams. Gonzaga University Bulldog Basketball making it to the national title game with a 37-1 record was something that he couldn’t believe would happen at the first of the year. Coach Few won’t need a national championship to make the Hall of Fame.

Gonzaga lost in the national championship title game and finished the season with a record of 37-2. Only nine schools in the history of the tournament have gotten 37 victories in a season. Coach Few has over 500 wins and one of the best winning percentages in all of the College basketball.

Coach Few has been on the college basketball scene for two decades now. He has taken a Cinderella and made them into a High-major school. The Gonzaga University Bulldogs Basketball team had never been to a NCAA Tournament game before 1995. Now people just expect them to make it every year.

A national championship would have been the icing on the cake for any coach since only one team and coach beat 67 others out for that prize. Mark Few has had a couple of disappointing years, but there is a great victory in the loss for Gonzaga. The program will get a new level of respect and viability. Coach Few has been to 18 consecutive NCAA Tournaments which is one of the longest streaks every and the best by a non-power conference team.

This group that they had was good enough to win a National Title, so it leaves the door open for the next great recruiting class of Zags to come in and do something that they weren’t able to do.
