Frank Vogel – Orlando Magic PNR Stagger Away by Wes Kosel
Here is another set play from Orlando Magic Head Coach Frank Vogel. The play was used in the NBA pre-season against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Vogel joins the Magic organization after being the head coach of the Indiana Pacers. Last season, under head coach Scotty Brooks, the Magic finished 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 35-47 record. Brooks stepped down as head coach and Vogel then took over. The team is quite different than last year’s Magic squad, but Vogel will look to implement his system and get the Magic back to the playoffs. Vogel played Division III basketball at Juniata in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania and then transferred to Kentucky where he was a student manager under Rick Pitino. Vogel then went with Pitino to the NBA as a video coordinator for Pitino’s Boston Celtics. After that, Vogel was set in the NBA coaching for several different organizations before landing in Indiana as an assistant and eventually head coach.

Frank Vogel Orlando Magic PNR Stagger Away
1 passes to 5 who passes to 2 on the left wing. 1 then cuts to the right corner to space and get ready for his cut. Once 2 has the ball, 4 steps out to set a side ball screen. 2 attacks middle as 4 rolls to the basket or short corner. As 2 attacks middle, 5 and 3 screen away for 1 in the right corner. The action on the weak side away from the ball screen forces x5, x3, and x1 to be occupied leaving a true two man action on the left side of the floor. 2 and 4 look to make a play, but if nothing is there 1 may be open for a shot.
