I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Defense: Pick up point is half court
– Not going to prevent good players from scoring, just make it tougher
– NBA: 22% of contested shots went in (Best shooters in the world)
– Trust your teammates (must build it everyday)

– Make all players work on guarding the ball
Square at the top (elbow to elbow, nothing down the middle)
Nose on top side hip (literally) Forces ball handler to be low
ANGLES! Crack to the glass at all times

– Work hard on guarding that first dribble (rep it)
– Don’t touch dribbler; must guard with NO hands
– Big first step! No straight line drive = Direct drive is no time to help
– Make the first pass as difficult as possible

– On the line up the line; Further away the ball is from half court the more aggressive they play
Don’t give up gaps
No ball in paint

– Elbow is the “kill zone” of the defenses: Don’t let the ball get to the elbow
– PG take away high pass (hands up) wing take away the low back door pass
– Pop the head on backcut & cover low bounce pass
– Bigs: Are there to help on the backcut

– Wing entry MUST catch the ball moving away from the basket
Give HS players time to get to midline

– Deny ball from wing back to the top
– Post defense is high side (not front / not behind) space from post offense. Don’t let offense get body on you
– Get “skinny” so you can’t get screened as well
– Help side post players block shots (if they have that ability) if not they must take a charge
– Force offense to dribble in traffic

– Help on baseline drive with (lowest guard)
Only help when drive gets outside his hips

– Post player on high side bury post offense to baseline
– Kids haven’t changed, adults have lowered the expectations/standards that we hold students to. Don’t defeat – Inspire
