Four Low Blob Situation Plays by Ben Farquhar

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

The following are some good looks to run out of a 4 low set in a BLOB situation. This formation is extremely hard to scout as you can flip your bigs and guards into any spot, simply by having an exchange like in “Rip”. If teams front the pass, then the inbounder just needs to throw it over the top, essentially throwing the big open.

Blob Situation:  “4 Flat DHO Throwback” for shooter:
–1 to 5 to 4.
–5 screens 1 into a DHO with 4.
–After DHO, 5 & 4 set double for 3 as 1 comes off looking to attack.
–Options for 1 are attack the basket, throwback to 3 off double, or penetrate and kick to 2 in corner.

Blob Situation:  “4 Flat Double” for shooter:
–On entry to the 5, the 4 rises up the lane for the catch.
–The 1 enters and 1 and 5 set screens for 3 sending him to the wing.
–4 dribbles over to the right side as the 2 v-cuts hard creating sense that action is running to his side.
–after the 3 clears, 1 continues through to opposite corner and the 5 seals hard on the catch by 3. If no shot, than there is a post look with the 5.

Blob Situation:  “4 Flat Rip” for big:
–3 and 4 move simultaneously.
–On catch by 3, 4 & 5 rise up lane as ball gets reversed quickly. 1 enters, backscreens 2, and pops for catch.
–2 backscreens 5 to strong side block, and then gets a screen from 4 in basic STS action.
–First look for 1 is 5 diving to block, and then 2 coming of screen from 4.

Blob Situation:  “4 Flat STS” for shooter:
–4 rises up lane line as 3 sets diagonal sending him to block
–5 sets screen for 3 sending him to strong side corner and then dives to open area.
–If no shot for 3 on catch, 5 can come set a ballscreen with 1 following behind for basic circle action.

Blob Situation:  “4 Flat Flex” for big:
–Enter to 5 as 4 and 3 rise up lane lines for quick reversal.
–1 enters and sets flex screen for 5 cutting to strong side block. 4 sets down screen for 1 for flex action.

Blob Situation:  “4 Flat Upscreen” Flex Variation:
–Same start as Flex, however on catch by 4, he pass fakes hard, then kicks back to 5 as 1 sprints into backscreen sending him to strong side block.
