Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Dwane Casey Toronto Raptors Set Plays by Gibson Pyper

This year the Toronto Raptors had a great 50 win season and a birth in the eastern conference finals and Dwane Casey’s offensive sets had a lot to do with their success. Being able to integrate great sets designed with their two best players, Kyle Lowry and Demar Derozan, to be able to score as well as create for others was key. I loved the Dwane Casey Toronto Raptors Set Plays during the NBA Play-offs.

Dwane Casey Toronto Raptors Set Plays: “AI Chicago Pin”

This set is designed for multiple actions into a final pindown screen for a shooter, beginning with and iverson cut over the top of both bigs at the elbows. After the initial guard clears the screens the point guard passes to the 5 man at the elbow and cuts off him toward the ballside corner. The point guard screens down for the guard in the corner and the big man follows into a dribble hand off for the guard coming off. Simultaneously, the opposite big sets a pindown screen for the guard who cut across off the iverson cut and the guard after the dribble hand off looks to hit him for a quick shot.

Dwane Casey Toronto Raptors Set Plays: “Swing Mix Stagger”

Designed out of the european ballscreen motion in which the big steps up and the ball is reversed with multiple options, this set is looking to get a guard off a stagger screen. The pass gets reversed to the big at the top of the key who then dribbles at the guard on the wing who cuts backdoor. Continuing after the guard cuts backdoor the big dribbles into a hand off with the guard replacing, as the guard cutting backdoor continues off a stagger screen from the point guard and the initial big who set the ballscreen. In this set majority of the time is run for Kyle Lowry to cut off the stagger screen on the opposite side, especially after time outs.

Dwane Casey Toronto Raptors Set Plays: “Carolina Leak”

A simple set out of the transition break with the ball reversed to the big at the top of the key and then passed to the wing. As the ball is reversed the guard in the corner sets a backscreen for the big at the top of the key and then cuts over the side of the big in the post to the baseline for a shot.

Dwane Casey Toronto Raptors Set Plays: “Double Drag Pindown”

Out of their early offense series, the double drag, which is a staggered double ballscreen in transition from both bigs for the point guard. This set is run into a pindown screen for the guard in the corner to get a quick shot, which can be run as a set or a read in the flow of play.

Dwane Casey Toronto Raptors Set Plays: “Chin”

A basic version of the typical Chin set, this is a guard receiving a screen and receiving the pass from the point guard. After the point guard passes he cuts off a backscreen to the corner and the big follows into a ballscreen. This is a simple set that the Raptors have several counters out of and are able to score effectively off of as well.

Dwane Casey Toronto Raptors Set Plays: “Fist Up Short Hand Off/Backdoor”

One of the most effective sets the Toronto Raptors ran for the last few years has been an adaptation off of the Fist Up Short set the Phoenix Suns ran under D’Antoni and Gentry. Against teams that hard hedge or aggresively play the ballscreen, this set is designed to get a quick pass after a ballscreen into the post. As the point guard comes off the ballscreen up top the post follows ballside and receives the pass. The options after this are simple, either the guard comes off a dribble hand off looking to attack or he goes backdoor for a layup.
