I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Don Meyer BLOB Plays by Wes Kosel

I was fortunate enough to attend the Don Meyer Coaching Clinic in Eastland, Texas today. (More notes to come from the clinic later!) Attached in this playbook are 2 baseline out-of-bounds plays used by Coach Meyer. He stressed the importance of stretching the long corners along the baseline when using BLOB plays. With these plays, the defense will be at a disadvantage and either switch or over-extend. Both plays start in a box formation to make it difficult to scout. In addition, Meyer emphasized player placement making sure to put the shooters, athletes, posts, and “principal’s sons” in the correct positions.

Don Meyer BLOB Plays – Top

5 and 4 both set up screens for 1 and 2 respectively. 1 and 2 stretch the long corner looking for shots. If neither 1 or 2 is open, 4 sets a screen for 5 who loops around 4 and cuts to the basket. 4 then pops out to the top of the key. 3 looks to pass to 5 for a lay-up or to 4 for a shot. If 4 doesn’t have a shot, 4 can also look at 5 with a hi/lo pass.

Don Meyer BLOB Plays – Triple

Option 1: 5 and 3 set up on a staggered screen while 4 turns to set an up screen for 2. 2 fakes the cut to the corner and cuts off of the staggered screen from 3 and 5 to the opposite wing. Once 2 starts toward the staggered screen, 4 turns and looks for a shot in the corner.

Option 2: This option is set up the exact same way, but 2 instead cuts to the corner off of the screen from 4. 4 then uses the staggered screen from 3 and 5 to cut to the opposite wing. 1 looks for 4 or 2 for a shot.
