Dean Smith North Carolina BLOB by Wes Kosel
Here is a baseline out-of-bounds play by Dean Smith. Coach Smith, a Kansas native, was the head coach at North Carolina for 36 years. During his time in Chapel Hill, he won 879 games and 2 NCAA National Championships (1982, 1993). Coach Dean Smith only had 1 losing season as a head coach, leading the Tarheels to 8-9 in 1961 (Smith’s first season as the head coach at UNC). Prior to becoming a head coach, Dean Smith was an assistant at his alma mater Kansas, Air Force, and North Carolina. He developed his coaching philosophy in part from two great coaches, Dr. Phog Allen and Coach Frank McGuire.
Listed below are a few points from the Coach Dean Smith coaching philosophy:
• Utilize personnel as effectively as possible
• Encourage team play
• Look to fast break
• Concentrate on the high-percentage shot
• Multiple Offense
• Eliminate the element of surprise through thorough preparation
This baseline out-of-bounds play has 2 options. In the first option, 5 turns and screens for 4. 4 cuts to the corner and 5 cuts toward the basket after setting the screen. 3 is looking for 4 or 5 for an open shot. If 2’s defender is sucked in toward the middle or has his back to the ball, 3 can pass straight to 2 in the opposite corner for an open 3-point shot. In option 2, 5 turns to screen for 4, but instead of 4 cutting to the corner he cuts toward the basket. This option works best when 4’s defender tries to jump the screen toward the corner. 3 looks to pass to 4 at the basket and can pass to 5 in the corner as well. In both options, 1 moves up toward half-court as the safety valve. If 3 has to pass to 1, then 1 can get the offense into basic offense or a set.
