Dave Severns LA Clippers Pistol / Hurry Up Offense Testimonial by Aaron Toler

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Hey Coach,

I recently installed this offense as a change of pace and catch up type offense we will go to when we are down late. I watched the video and then put it in at practice over a couple of days. We worked on it maybe 10-15 minutes each day and went over some of the basic reads. The video gave me enough information to quickly learn it and teach it to my team.

Our first game of the season we were down 10 in the 4th quarter with about 4 minutes left and went to it. The spacing and quick reads the defense has to make are extremely difficult to guard. We got 2 quick layups and drew 3 fouls that put us in the bonus. Within 2 minutes we had tied the game and had a chance to win at the end. I love it as a comeback game because your players are in attack mode in the offense and most defenses late when they are ahead don’t want to foul.

Our players really enjoyed the offense and picked it up very quickly. This video shows you multiple options for you to use to put your best players in position to score quickly.  Coach Severns shows multiple options and the terminology and language he uses is easy to understand.

If you have a good post player the pick and roll options out of transition can isolate him/her quickly.

Quick point guards can put tremendous pressure on the defense off the initial action by turning the corner for a layup.

Shooters/slashers have room to create and shoot off of down screen weakside actions.

It reminds me of the option offense in football. There is so much going on quickly that defenses have a hard time communicating through everything.

Let me know if you need anything else from me! I really appreciate it.
