I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Dave Arseneault Grinnell Pioneers Offense by Wes Kosel

Attached are three set plays from Grinnell College head coach Dave Arseneault. Known best for running “the system”, Arseneault always has his Pioneers scoring fast and scoring often. This season, the Pioneers led the country in several scoring categories including points per game (114), 3-point field-goals per game (21.9), and assists per game (20.1). Grinnell also led the country in offensive rebounds per game with 19 and were 2nd in steals per game with 12.7. Jack Taylor led all of Division III in scoring with 28.4 ppg. Taylor also made an average of 5 3-point field-goals per contest. In 26 years at Grinnell, Arseneault has compiled a 345-257 record and 12 seasons with 15 or more wins.

In this play, the Pioneers spread the floor with shooters in the corners. Both post players screen down for the shooters. 3 and 2 cut off of the screens looking primarily for a 3-point shot.

Dave Arseneault Grinnell Pioneers Offense – Trailer Pick
1 dribbles down the right side of the floor as 4 follows into a drag screen. At the same time, 2 runs from the ball-side corner to the opposite wing off of a staggered down-screen from 5 and 3. 1 looks to shoot off of the initial ball-screen or pass to 2 cutting out to the 3-point line. If 2 gets the ball without a shot, he looks to the corner for 4 cutting off of a second staggered-screen from 5 and 3.

2 runs across the floor off of the staggered-screen from 3 and 5. If 4 is ahead of the point guard, he can join in on the screen to set a triple staggered-screen for 2. If 2 doesn’t have anything, he looks to the right as 3 cuts off of a screen from 4 and 1.

Wes Kosel just completed his first year as an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas and a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, USA Basketball, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
