Darussafaka Istanbul

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Darussafaka Istanbul wins Eurocup title!

Darussafaka Istanbul is the 2018 EuroCup champion and will be moving on to the Euroleague. Darussafaka beat Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar on Friday in Game 2 of a best of 3 championship series, 67-59. Darussfaka won game one on Tuesday in overtime. The Eurocup win ended a 50-year trophy drought for the team from Turkey.

If the team name Darussfaka isn’t familiar to you, perhaps their head coach may be David Blatt. Just two years ago, Blatt was the head coach of Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. After being fired during the 2016 season, Blatt returned to Europe where he has had a great tenure of success. He’s coached mainly in Israel but has had stints in Russia, Greece, and Turkey as well. He came to the Cavaliers from Maccabi Tel-Aviv where he won the Euroleague Championship and Euroleague Coach of the Year.

Darussafaka has become the second Turkish team to win the Eurocup, after Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul in the 2015-16 season, and earned the right to participate in the 2018-19 EuroLeague. Darussafaka boss David Blatt became the second head coach ever to win the EuroLeague and EuroCup titles, after Dusan Ivkovic.

Coach David Blatt is looking to return to the NBA in 2018-19 with his name being mentioned in connection with the newly-vacant head coaching position of the New York Knicks. There are several coaching changes in the NBA this off-season: Milwaukee, Phoenix, and Memphis.

Coach Blatt told the newspapers in Jerusalem that there were no changes in the NBA this year from a coaching standpoint and his real goal is to try and be back in the league as a head coach.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com reported Jeff Hornacek’s firing and gave us the early list of potential replacements: Former NBA head coaches David Fizdale, David Blatt, and Mark Jackson—as well as longtime guard Jerry Stackhouse, who currently coaches in the G League.

David Blatt was the 2014 Euroleague Coach of the Year that never got along with Lebron James while he coached the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was let go less than two seasons despite going 83-40.
