I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Attached is a sideline out-of-bounds play from Coach Danny Manning. Manning, the former All-American and National Player of the Year for Kansas in the late 1980’s, just landed the head coaching job at Wake Forest after two seasons as head coach at the University of Tulsa. Manning led the Golden Hurricane to 21 wins this season as well as a share of the regular season Conference USA title (13-3 in C-USA play), and in addition a Conference USA tournament championship win over Louisiana Tech. Prior to taking over at Tulsa, Manning was an assistant for Bill Self at Kansas for 9 years. Manning helped coach several post players at Kansas including Wayne Simien, Darnell Jackson, Cole Aldrich, Marcus & Markieff Morris, Jeff Withey, and Thomas Robinson. Although he is best known for the “Danny and the Miracles” run in which he led the Jayhawks to the NCAA Championship in 1988, he is off to a great start in his coaching career and I look forward to seeing what he can do at Wake Forest.

Danny Manning Tulsa Golden Hurricane SLOB – Line 1

4, 5, 1, and 3 set up in a line formation along the ball-side lane line. 1 runs up the lane line off of screens from 5 and 4. 3 steps out to the corner. 2 passes to 1. 1 then dribbles across the floor. As 1 is dribbling, 4 moves toward the opposite elbow as if he is going to post up or cut but instead turns and sets a staggered screen with 5 for 2 who runs across the floor to the opposite wing. 1 looks for 2 curling around the screen for a shot. If 2 doesn’t have a shot, he first looks to drive baseline with the open floor. If the baseline drive isn’t open, 4 steps over to set a ball-screen for 2. 2 then drives middle looking to a) score, b) pass to 4 cutting to the basket after the screen, or c) pass to 5 diving down to the basket from the high post.
