Dana Altman Oregon Ducks Spread Offense

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Dana Altman Oregon Ducks Spread Offense

The Dana Altman Oregon Ducks Spread Offense is a thing of beauty and a matchup nightmare for their opponents. Their team spreads the other team out and shreds them.

The Oregon Ducks have players that excel in their spread offense. Last year, they took college basketball by storm, and they went 31-7. The Ducks won the Pac-12 and a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Ducks have versatile players that excel in all spots. By spreading the floor, leaving the lane open and opening it up. It’s an actual position-less basketball offense.

The Dana Altman Oregon Ducks Spread Offense open up cutting lanes and for back cuts. The free throw line area is ideal for screening. That is what creates the shot opportunities. The ball goes from one side to the other.

Coach Altman believe in individual matchups with his offense. When you scout your opponent, you identify their weaknesses and make them pay for them. The NBA does the same thing.

Coach Altman’s base offense came from Johnny Orr; the legendary coach at Iowa State University. The base offense lacks a true low-post threat, but big men that can drive, pass and shoot.

They have a lot of shooters to spread that floor. They are still doing things that worked for the past 20 years. Some of their go-to plays are the same as what they ran at Creighton.

Here is what is happening to the Oregon Ducks right now:

Oregon has a game against California on wednesday. It’s critical that both teams win that game. The game is in Berkeley, California. The Ducks are 24-4, and 13-2 in the Pac-12 Conference. The Ducks are still hoping to capture a second straight regualar season Pac-12 title.

The Oregon Ducks might need some help to earn a share of the conference title. The Ducks are in second place right now. They are one game behind Arizona that is 14-1 in the Pac-12 and play ULCA and USC this week.
