As coaches prepare for the upcoming season, many will be conducting parent meetings prior to the start. Here is one coach’s list of what he can and can’t do for each of his players.
I can’t guarantee any/equal playing time
I can’t promise each player will get an amount of shots/points satisfactory to him
I can’t commit to ensuring each game is officiated perfectly
I can’t dedicate each practice to getting you to follow rules, work hard, have a good attitude
I can’t read your mind over concerns/problems you may be having
I can’t put your interests above the team or program’s best interests
I can’t ignore habits that are detrimental to you as a student, athlete or person
I can’t allow your effort, attitude or habits to harm our team or program
I can’t lie to you
I can give you an opportunity to improve everyday in practice, workouts, study table and film sessions
I can show you your value to our team and program
I can provide an experience that will be memorable
I can teach you about sacrifice, selflessness & being a great teammate
I can help you develop life-long relationships
I can help you improve your commitment, discipline and work ethic, laying the foundation that will help you be successful in life
I can teach you the fundamentals and strategy of basketball, increasing your knowledge, interest and love of the game
I can provide experiences that other students in our school do not have an opportunity to experience
I can connect you with college opportunities
I can push you further than you realize you are capable of
I can love you and make decisions that are in the best interest of you and your teammates
