Atlanta Hawks Basketball: Coach Mike Budenholzer is still one of the NBA’s Best Coaches. Great NBA Set Plays inside for you!

Coach Mike Budenholzer

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Learn from this Gregg Popovich Disciple: Coach Mike Budenholzer can draw up some great Xs and Os. Great Set Plays inside for you!

Coach Mike Budenholzer

Coach Mike Budenholzer and the Atlanta Hawks have had a rough ending to their regular season. They were borderline of being a .500 basketball team for the first time since the 2014 NBA Campaign. The Atlanta Hawks made the NBA Playoffs and are leading the Washington Wizards right now.

Mike Budenholzer has kept the Hawks competitive since he became the head coach in 2013. The Atlanta Hawks had an average basketball team this season, but their fans were expecting All-star level outcomes.

The Hawks thought that they might win fifty plus games this season with the lineup of Dwight Howard and Paul Millsap alone. Let alone that you put in Dennis Schroder, Thabo Sefolosha, and Kent Bazemore.

Everyone except for Dennis Schroder is known for their defensive prowess which might explain why they were in top 10 in that category for most of the season. But, how were they going to find any offense?

As I write this article, I am noticing that they lack some outside shooting. Paul Millsap is the best offensive player on the team, but he isn’t in the elite status of a Steph Curry or James Harden. He takes what the defense gives him, but he can’t knock down long-range shots in a row to help the Atlanta Hawks beat anyone

The Hawks traded away Kyle Korver to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Korver was their best three point shooter. Schroder has a great mid-range game, but he can’t hit the three point shot at a high rate.

Dwight Howard is a monster on the boards, but he can’t score outside the paint. Thabo and Kent can play excellent defense, but they can’t knock down the three point shot on a consistent level.

The main thing that I see is that Coach Mike Budenholzer has accomplished a lot without much talent.

Coach Budenholzer had Jeff Teague and Al Horford last year. Horford would space the floor with his midrange game and three point shot. Teague knew the system inside and out.

This year, Coach Mike Budenholzer had to teach the system to the new guys: Schroder and Howard. It takes the time to build team chemistry and get how their players play.

Coach Budenholzer had to teach Schroder and Dwight the system, help mold a young point guard in his first year as a starter, build team chemistry, and even tweak his system because of how Howard plays.

Schroder can get to the basket, but he has a center that plays in the paint and he needs one that can step out to the three-point line. The Golden State Warriors can have a paint post player because they don’t rely on drives to the hoop.

Coach Budenholzer’s system is about ball movement, and they don’t have superstars on their team like other teams do. Coach Budenholzer’s winning percentage is 57.3 percent. This coach that doesn’t have star players that can make a clutch basket.

The Atlanta Hawks basketball team is about ball movement and has been since Coach Budenholzer joined Atlanta. That’s how the Hawks went 60-22 in the 2014-2015 season. There weren’t any superstars on the team, just like there aren’t any now.

Coach Budenholzer has made the best out of his situation. Here is how an NBA coach wins without big time talent. I think that it would be a scary thought if the Atlanta Hawks had a superstar player which he is the coach there.
