I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Building a Tradition of Excellence

Part 1
While this is a basketball web site I think that coaching and concepts for building successful teams translates from sport to sport and even successful companies to sport. He has done an amazing job with less “big names” while at Boise State so to take parts of his philosophy and use them at any level to be successful is common sense. As the great Pete Carill always said “The smart take from the strong”.

Excellence – to do a common thing with uncommon discipline and uncommon persistence | Chris Petersen Boise State University Pyramid of Success

Here are his thoughts on being and Elite Coach:

Integrity: Honest, Humble, Respectful, Selfless, Patient, Forgiving, Committed
These characteristics should be addressed before recruiting or making cuts. These attributes of an individual can impact a team in a positive or negative way, making sure that your players fit the culture you want is vital to your success

Quest for Constant Improvement: Always trying to find a better way; creative; passion for football (basketball) and recruiting
This should be encouraged in our players as well as the coaching staff in every aspect of life.

Positive & Enthusiastic: Bring people “up”; Instill confidence in others; sense of humor | Chris Petersen Boise State University Pyramid of Success
Positive people attract followers. It’s just natural that we want to be around those types of personalities. It’s fun to work with and play for. This doesn’t mean that you goof off or don’t hold people accountable but enjoy what you’re doing and let those around you enjoy it too!

Great Teacher: Expert, Prepared, Clear, Concise, & Substantive
Bob Knight was always a big believer in “Coaching is an extension of the classroom”. Great teachers connect with their students and great coaches do the same on the court.

Poised: Can control temper when frustrated; under control when no one else is
This must be exemplified from the top down. I’m always amazed at coaches that go crazy on an official on the sideline but expect their players to keep it under control. Lead by example.

Demanding: High standards; will hold people accountable; composed
People want to work for and play for demanding not demeaning.

Self-Starter: One step ahead; high output; low maintenance, take care of your responsibilities | Chris Petersen Boise State University Pyramid of Success
Coaches must have initiative. Don’t wait to be asked look at what you can do to help the head coach and the team.

Work Ethic: Grinder, Relentless finisher, Work smarter not harder
I love the quote “you can have million dollar dreams with a minimum wage work ethic”!

Organized: Simplify, no detail is too small, meeting room is clan & functional
*1 hr meeting requires 2 hrs of preparation
*End staff meetings in time for coaches to prepare for their responsibilities and area meetings
