Baseline Inbound

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

One of the best ways to get a great shot off an inbounds play is by setting up the player that the defense is paying the least attention to – the inbounder – and that’s exactly what were going to do in this next play.

To start, have your players line up across the baseline, with your point guard in the ball side corner and your three man in the opposite. The center will stand on the block in front of the inbounder with the two guard on the other, and the power forward will be inbounding.

When the inbounder slaps the ball, the center will come across the lane to set a screen for the shooting guard, freeing him up for a pass as he fades to the free throw line.

The inbounder will then take a misdirection step to the weak side, setting up his defender for the downscreen from the point guard. The inbounder will use this screen either spotting up for a three point shot or catching the ball on the curl back into the paint.
