Bryce Drew Valparaiso Game Winning Play by Wes Kosel
Here is the game-winning play used by Head Coach Homer Drew of Valparaiso in the 1998 NCAA Tournament first round game against #4 seed Ole Miss. Valparaiso was the #13 seed in the Midwest region, and with 2.5 seconds left to go in the game, Coach Drew ran this play to get his son, Bryce Drew, open for the game winning shot. Valpo was down by 2, and went for a 3 to win. The Crusaders had to go the length of the floor in less than 3 seconds, and decided to attempt it with a long pass. The play begins with everyone except the inbounder down on the far half of the floor. Here is the set-up: The inbounder should be your best passer, and he should focus on throwing the ball high. The player in the middle of the court (between half-court and the 3 point line) should be athletic and have good hands. He will need to jump up to catch the ball. Two wings should be on the sideline around half-court. These two players should be your best shooters. Another big should be underneath the basket ready to tip in a missed shot. The inbounder throws the ball in high to the middle of the floor. The receiver jumps up to catch the ball, and before he even lands he passes the ball to the wing. The wing player, Bryce Drew, catches the ball in stride and pulls up for an open 3 point shot. He sinks it, and Valpo wins the game. The Crusaders went on to defeat #12 seed Florida State in the second round, but fell to #8 seed Rhode Island in the Regional Semifinals. This historic Sweet 16 run is still one of the greatest highlights in Valparaiso basketball history, and this game-winning play is still one of the most recognized buzzer beaters in NCAA tournament play.
I hope you enjoy this play.
Best of luck,
