I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Brian Wardle UW Green Bay Phoenix Pick & Roll Actions by Wes Kosel

Here are 4 pick & roll actions from UW Green Bay Phoenix Head Coach Brian Wardle. Wardle just completed his 4th year as head coach of the Phoenix leading them to a 24-7 record and a NIT Tournament appearance. The Phoenix were 1 game from making it to the NCAA Tournament losing in the Horizon League Conference Tournament Championship Game against Milwaukee in overtime. Before becoming the head coach at UW Green Bay Phoenix, Wardle was an assistant for the program and also spent time as an assistant at Marquette. Wardle has led the Phoenix on quite a turnaround from going 14-18 his first year to a 24-7 record this past season. Wardle is also stacking up on awards winning the Horizon League Coach of the Year and the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Awards in 2014. Only 34 years old, we can look forward to many great seasons with Wardle as a head coach.

1 passes the ball to 2 on the wing then cuts through to the corner. 5 sprints into a wing ball-screen behind 1’s cut. 2 drives middle as 5 rolls and 4 replaces 5.

1 dribbles towards 2 and gives him the ball on a dribble hand-off. 5 sprints to the wing to set a ball-screen for 2. Just as in the first play, 2 drives as 5 rolls and 4 replaces 5.

1 gives the ball to 2 on a dribble hand-off but 5 stays on the opposite side of the floor instead of setting the ball-screen. As 2 drives middle, 5 sets a screen for 3 who flares to the opposite wing. 2 looks to hit 3 for a shot.

1 dribbles towards 2 sending to across the lane to set a screen for 5. If 5 isn’t open on the cut, he sets a ball-screen for 1. 1 drives middle as 5 rolls and 4 replaces. 1 can also look to pass to either 2 or 3 on the perimeter.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Doug Novak at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Kosel joined the staff at Bethel after serving two seasons at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
