I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. Brad Underwood SFA Lumberjacks Set Play by Wes Kosel

Attached is a hand-off option play from Stephen F. Austin head coach Brad Underwood. Underwood is in his second season as head coach of the Lumberjacks. In his inaugural season, he led the Lumberjacks to a 33-3 record, an 18-0 conference record in the Southland, a regular season and conference tournament championship, and an upset win in the NCAA Tournament over Shaka Smart’s VCU rams. This season, the Lumberjacks are 9-3 and have won 8 straight games after starting the season 1-3. Coach Underwood took the Stephen F. Austin job after serving as an assistant coach for Frank Martin at Kansas State and South Carolina. Before that, Underwood was the head coach at Daytona Beach Community College from 2003-2006 and at Dodge City Community College from 1988-1992. Although the Lumberjacks might not have the same 33-3 record this season, they will be in contention for another Southland Conference Championship and another run in the NCAA tournament. In 2014, Underwood was named the Southland Coach of the Year and was also awarded as the Joe B. Hall Coach of the Year.

Brad Underwood SFA Lumberjacks Set Play – Hand-Off Option
This play starts with 1 passing to 4 then cutting to the basket off of a back-screen from 5. 4 gives the ball to 3 on a hand-off and 3 looks to pass to 1 on the back-cut. If that isn’t open, 3 dribbles across the floor as 2 screens in for 5 at the elbow. 3 passes to 5 then loops around 5 to the corner. 5 can either give the ball to 3 on a hand-off or look for 1 cutting off of a double screen from 2 and 4 on the opposite side of the floor.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
