Brad Underwood Oklahoma State University Spread Offense

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Brad Underwood Oklahoma State University Spread Offense

The Brad Underwood Oklahoma State University Spread Offense is one of the nation’s best efficiency offenses in the country. Coach Underwood used this offense at Stephen F. Austin and with Kansas State. This offense helped the SFA Lumberjacks make it to the second round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Coach Underwood uses a base offense, but sprinkles in some set plays and quick hitter out of this motion scheme.

The spread offense uses one post player and four guards that are interchangeable. The Offense is designed to keep moving, and the play never stops. The offense has one big in the center of the free throw line and four guards spread out around the arc.

Cutting actions are the base of this offense. If the defense is playing too tight on the guards, then the guard will back cut. If the defense is playing soft, then this action allows the guards to pass and shoot an uncontested jump shot.

The Pinch Post is my favorite part of this offense. The pinch post is a two man game with the big and guard. It can be a dribble hand-off or ball screen. The guard reads the action and will do whatever is given to him. It can lead to a pick and roll or pick and pop.

I like this spread motion offense, because of the spacing and continuity. The attack never stops and will allow the players to pursue the absolute best shot.

How are the Oklahoma State Cowboys doing right now:

Coach Underwood returns to his alma mater tonight. The Cowboys are currently playing Kansas State right now. The Cowboys are 7-7 in conference play, and that is one game ahead of TCU and Kansas State.

A win against Kansas State will help OSU’s NCAA Tournament resume, and a loss won’t be too bad. The Cowboys will face Texas Tech at home on Saturday.
